Earthworm surveying on the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ campus
On 20th April, Nature Sense, on behalf of the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ, will be running an earthworm surveying day on campus and inviting volunteers to take part.
During the event, volunteers will be taught how to identify some of the common species of earthworm found in local soils and learn about the behaviours that shape the ecosystems beneath our feet. Described as the “intestines of the earth” by Aristotle and “nature’s ploughs” by Darwin, earthworms have long been recognised for their importance, yet remain relatively understudied compared with other invertebrates.
By taking part, you will become a citizen scientist, contributing valuable data to Nature Sense’s Sussex‑wide ecological monitoring programme. In our previous campus survey, carried out last autumn, we found striking differences in earthworm numbers between the two sites we studied. We’re excited to see how things compare this spring.
All are welcome, and no prior knowledge is required.
