Module Outline
Given how many cell divisions occur in an organisms’ lifetime it is remarkable that the genome remains so stable. This is largely thanks to highly conserved DNA repair processes which are vital for protection against cancer and other diseases. This module will explore the various types of DNA damage and a detailed mechanistic view of the repair processes that have evolved to repair such damage. Students will gain insights into the clinical consequences when these repair processes fail. This module will be taught by a mixture of lectures and interactive seminars exploring the key topics in more detail.
Module learning outcomes
Critically evaluate and synthesise current literature on the types and sources of DNA damage, integrating mechanistic insights to explain their roles in mutagenesis and cancer development, and communicate these analyses concisely .
Critically appraise the spectrum of clinical phenotypes arising from inherited and acquired defects in DNA repair pathways, integrating molecular, cellular, and clinical data to evaluate the complexities and uncertainties of diagnosis, prognosis.
Interpret, critique, and contextualise experimental research findings in DNA damage and repair, demonstrating an ability to critically analyse data, evaluate methodologies, and formulating evidence-based conclusions with future research questions that requires knowledge of up-to-date methods to address them.
