Module Outline

This module focuses on the concept that protein structure is central to protein function. You will gain a sense of how protein structures are related to each other and of how these structures relate to protein function. You will develop the necessary knowledge and skills be able to fully understand the process of structure determination and how this can be used to better understand the functionality of proteins.
The module builds on fundamental aspects covered in the Year 2 module, Structural Basis of Biological Function. Teaching sessions are used to introduce computational and experimental techniques that are essential for studying proteins. This work provides the basis for the in-depth discussion of more topical issues such as protein complexes and regulation, and protein folding.

Module learning outcomes

Critically appraise and justify the selection of experimental and analytical methods used to investigate protein structure, evaluating their relative strengths and limitations in the context of current research.

Synthesise knowledge of protein structure–function relationships to critically evaluate how structural data informs our understanding of protein behaviour in biological systems.

Critically evaluate the mechanistic principles underlying protein folding, engaging with primary research literature to assess current models and their limitations.

Formulate evidence-based solutions to complex problems in protein science by critically appraising competing methodological and conceptual approaches, and constructing original, well-reasoned arguments.
