Module Outline
This module explores a range of major signalling pathways in cells and explores how dysregulation of these pathways can result in a loss of growth control and oncogenesis. The module aims to put you in the shoes of research scientists, demonstrating how developing knowledge and understanding of the mechanics of these pathways can lead to the design and use of targeted pharmacological agents for successful cancer treatment. Particular focus is given to breast cancer and glioblastoma. The signalling pathways/molecules covered will include:
• RTKs
• Ras, Raf, MEK and ERK
• PI-3-kinase, AKT and mTOR
• Jak/Stat
• Integrins
• Hypoxia and angiogenesis
Module learning outcomes
Summarise the major types of signalling pathways in the cell and explain the mechanisms underlying the activation and regulation of these pathways in breast and brain cancers.
Appraise how multiple signalling pathways interact to produce a co-ordinated response to external stimuli within the body, promoting cell proliferation, survival and movement
Illustrate how dysregulation in these pathways results in a loss of growth control and the development of cancer.
Apply your knowledge of cell signalling to explain the rational design of therapeutic agents targeting these pathways in disease processes.
