Module Outline
This module is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms that lead to the development of some of the most common brain disorders. The module will investigate the primary target of each disease within the brain and its pathological hallmarks. This is followed by exploring the genetic, cellular and molecular basis of the disease. It will also examine current strategies and outlooks for treating the studied brain disorders. Students will develop their ability to synthesise ideas and to concisely explain scientific content, critically appraise academic literature and methodologies, and consider ethics.
Module learning outcomes
Develop a systematic understanding of the presentation, risk factors, and cellular and molecular mechanisms of a select group of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions.
Be able to critically evaluate the roles of model systems and their translational relevance in brain disorder research.
Be able to critically evaluate clinical and preclinical evidence for therapeutics associated with brain disorders, considering mechanism, efficacy, and ethical limitations.
Synthesise complex primary scientific findings into coherent evidence-based arguments and supporting graphical narratives for a scientific audience.
