Module Outline
This research project module develops capacity to critically engage with scientific literature to build a deep and objective understanding of a defined research topic. Through guided reading, analysis, and synthesis of peer-reviewed sources, students will identify key themes, methodologies, and knowledge gaps relevant to their area of study. Students will receive tailored support from their project supervisors to prepare for independent data collection. This may include guidance on research planning, risk assessments, ethical approvals, and identifying necessary training or logistical arrangements. The nature and extent of this preparation will vary depending on the specific project. By the end of the module, students will be equipped with academic and practical foundations necessary to undertake an independent research project.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of a specialised topic in the area of their degree and the ability to critically evaluate primary literature and experimental data
Plan and execute an independent piece of project work on a specialised topic in the area of their degree, demonstrating understanding and competence in practical research techniques, problem solving and autonomy, and ability to assess risks and issues with regards to health and safety.
Show an understanding of ethical aspects and the potential impacts of research on a specialised topic
Demonstrate the ability to learn independently from experience to develop skills and understanding
