This module is for students who can already communicate with some independence in Spanish.

Building on existing levels of proficiency at level A2+-B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the module aims to:

  • enable you to understand key information and to communicate effectively in Spanish, sometimes spontaneously, in less routine situations at a standard level
  • provide opportunities across a variety of topics to practice understanding and communicating in Spanish using the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, at a standard level
  • consolidate and develop the range of key elements of the structures, vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation of Spanish, to allow continued progression
  • present the background culture and society of the Spanish-speaking world through contextualised activities and materials in a range of media, eg text, audio, audiovisual, and digital.

Successfully completing of the module is equivalent to level B1 of the CEFR for Languages.

Module learning outcomes

  • With reference to CEFR B1 level, the student can demonstrate understanding of the main points of clear standard target language across a variety of routine topics.
  • S/he can demonstrate effective communication in the target language in unpredictable or less routine situations, within a selected range of formal/informal contexts.
  • S/he can demonstrate acquisition of a good range of vocabulary and application of standard language structures of the target language.
  • S/he has developed an awareness of aspects of the general social and cultural background of the target language and can demonstrate an appropriate response in selected associated cultural settings and contexts.
