Experimental Particle Physics Fellowships

The Experimental Particle Physics (EPP) group at the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ welcomes expressions of interest from outstanding candidates wishing to apply for externally funded research fellowships.

We support applications to the following schemes:

STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships (ERF)

The STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship scheme supports early career researchers with exceptional potential. The 2026 round is now open, and candidates interested in applying with Sussex are encouraged to contact us as early as possible.

How to apply:

Candidates should complete either the STFC ERF Expression of Interest Form or a narrative CV in the , and prepare a research proposal (maximum 3 pages), ideally structured using STFC’s required format with clearly defined Vision and Approach sections.

Please email these documents to Professor Jeff Hartnell at j.j.hartnell@sussex.ac.uk. You should also arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to the same address.

We will review all expressions of interest and provide feedback before the internal selection process.

Next Steps

Shortlisted candidates will be notified in late July and assigned a mentor to help develop their full application for submission to STFC in early September.

Royal Society University Research Fellowships

The Royal Society offers a five-year University Research Fellowship for outstanding early career researchers. We welcome Royal Society Fellows at Sussex, but we can submit only a limited number of candidates, so we are holding an internal selection process.

How to apply:

Please email a CV and a draft research proposal to Professor Jeff Hartnell at j.j.hartnell@sussex.ac.uk, and arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to him by the internal deadline.

If you also wish to apply for an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship, your application will automatically be considered for the Royal Society University Research Fellowship if you are eligible.
